Who
Jayna Kouzouyan
As a second generation Bellydancer, Jayna Kouzouyan has been immersed in Middle Eastern music and dance her entire life. Her father is Armenian, born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, adding to the cultural aspect of her upbringing.
Jayna's mother was a successful dancer who co-authored a best-selling instructional book on Middle Eastern dance and co-founded the Middle Eastern Culture and Dance Association, a national organization better known as MECDA.
With a background in modern dance, jazz, and gymnastics, Jayna became increasingly intrigued with studying the art of bellydance when she saw the L.A.-based troupe Flowers of the Desert, directed by Laura Crawford, perform a fusion routine to the classic rock song, "Kashmir," by Led Zepplin. There was no turning back; the attraction was too intense. Jayna began studying with Kamala Almansor, one of the Flowers' original members, and a great inspiration to Jayna. Shortly thereafter, she had the pleasure of performing with that troupe, as well as joining Jillina and the Sahlala Dancers, directed by Jillina Carlano – another truly inspiring artist.
Jayna was First Runner-up and People's Choice Award winner at the prestigious BDUC Competition in the Fusion category in 2003.
Jayna's first instructional DVD was recently released by Goldhil Productions. It focuses upon the ability to project your emotions successfully to your audience, and is titled "Dance For Romance." She is also a featured performer on Hollywood Music Center's new DVD, "Shake It Up!" starring many of the best Bellydance soloists in the country.
She has also appeared in several other performance videos. She is currently writing an instructional DVD for "Mommie and Me" bellydancing.
Jayna is touring with the Bellydance Superstars - performing worldwide with a home base in Monte Carlo, where the troupe performs at Le Cabaret, adjacent to the central Casino. Prince Albert Grimaldi was a guest at a few performances.
